Also, Fr. Firestone is back this week and is giving a lecture on Thursday Jan 22nd on the role of religion in community organization. Come listen to his experience in Flint and discuss how the church can empower those with no political leverage.

Weekly Bulletin for January 11, 2015
We have some great events in store for January. Don’t miss Fr. Tom Firestone’s lecture on Thursday 1/22. His lecture and discussion will focus on how the church can empower those without political leverage. We are also still accepting registration for both the undergraduate women’s and men’s retreats.

Volunteer with our ESL Program
Our Hispanic Ministry is continuing the English as a Second Language (ESL) conversational program for our Hispanic/Latino community. The goal of the program is to provide a safe space for the Hispanic/Latino community at St. Mary to practice their English and receive personalized guidance from native English speakers.
ESL runs every Sunday this semester from 12:45-1:45 pm. We are seeking volunteers that would be interested in working one-on-one with adults that want to practice their English skills. While moderate proficiency in Spanish is preferred, it is NOT REQUIRED!
ESL was a huge success last semester and we look forward to continuing this successful program for the Winter 2015 semester! Please contact Caroline Soyars for more information about how to get involved.

There will be a luncheon in Donnelly Hall following Mass.

He’s headed to the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, CA to study the Sacraments and Liturgy. After that he travels to Cuernavaca, Mexico to polish his Spanish language skills. January Warming Shelter
St. Mary will continue to provide volunteers for the Daytime Warming Shelter from 9AM-4PM Monday-Friday through the end of January.
There are two shifts: 9AM-12PM and 12PM-4PM
Volunteers are asked to arrive 15 minutes before their shift begins in order to receive instructions from the shelter coordinator. We are also in need of donations of snacks for the shelter.

December Gift 2014
The end of the calendar year is approaching and with it the chance to offer St. Mary’s an end-of-year gift that will bless both the giver and receiver.
Beginning Sunday 12/14 you may contribute a December Gift to help us continue to offer our eight Sunday masses, confirmation prep for 57 eighth-graders, Family Faith Formation for 250 children and their parents and 65 undergraduate catechists, 230 student and resident parishioners in 26 Small Church Communities, baptism classes, baptisms, and other sacraments. You will also help us to support Ig.nite (70-80 undergrad students attending Thursday mass, dinner, and a presentation in spiritual formation), our ten undergrad interns, weekend retreats for undergrads, grads, and young professionals, to name only some of our great programs.
These gifts comprise our Annual Fund, which along with revenue from Sunday Collections, endowment interest and fees, allows us to do all we do – for you, for those we serve, and for our Creator and Lord.

Memorial Garden Columbarium
The custom of burying our loved ones near the parish church is almost as old as the concept of a parish itself. It is also a symbol of our life in faith, which begins in Baptism and ends with death and new life in Christ.
At the request of our parishioners, St. Mary Student Parish is constructing a memorial garden columbarium for the internment of remains of parish members and loved ones. A columbarium is an arrangement of openings, or niches, that are used as a permanent resting place for urns containing the cremated remains of an individual.
After years of planning, we’ve obtained permission from the Bishop and our memorial garden is under construction! Our columbarium is composed of cast bronze and granite, with 214 niches available. It is located in the courtyard behind the parish offices. The in-ground structure is along the wall facing the bell, and is visible from the upper atrium. In the spring, the surrounding areas of the columbarium will be beautifully landscaped.

SMSP Advent Blog
This December, we are embarking on a new and creative Advent journey at St. Mary. Members of the staff and student leaders are writing daily reflections about what inspires them as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of Christ. Our intention is to give voice to the people of God in our midst and to highlight the particular ways that God is becoming incarnate and dwelling among us right here in this parish. For this reason, we will not be offering the Advent reflection booklets that we have in the past* but hope instead that you will join us on this new Advent journey.
